[birdky] Sooty Terns Kentucky and Smithland Dams 13 July 2005

A quick report for those who may wish to bird the dams
area tomorrow. I'll post a more detailed report
sometime tomorrow also.

At least four Sooty Terns were observed from Kentucky
Dam this morning as late as approximately 11:00 cdt,
three adults and an immature. These may well have
been the same four observed late in the day on Tuesday
with three adults and an immature present then.

Melissa Easley, Larry Peavler and I spent most of the
day birding the dams area. Although the level of the
river at Smithland was reported on the internet as
being too high for the sandbar to be showing and
predicted to rise a few feet this week, we decided to
make the trip anyway. I was pleasantly surprised when
we arrived at the Buzzard's Roost and much of the bar
was showing. The local "buzzards" reported that it
just became exposed this morning.

One adult Sooty Tern was present flying over the river
when we arrived but soon departed. When we rechecked
the river at 4:10 there was an adult present and soon
another dropped out of the clouds/fog to join it. The
pair soon departed downstream. For those not familiar
with the Buzzard's Roost at Smithland, Hwy 453
dead-ends there. Displaced birds may possibly be
found in the dams/lakes area for a few days.

If attempting to view these terns from Kentucky Dam,
keep in mind that they are mostly seen VERY far from
the dam, usually in the edge of the fog/haze along the
horizon. A scope is usually needed for good looks.
