A couple of hours on the Sinclair Unit of the Peabody
WMA in Muhlenberg County on 5 July yielded mostly
resident breeding birds with many Henslow's Sparrows
in song.  A few Bell's Vireos were singing in the
mid-afternoon heat and I heard one Willow Flycatcher
calling from the shade where territorial birds have
been since spring.  

A single Least Sandpiper was present at the Paradise
ash basin, and six Great Egrets and a pair of
Double-crested Cormorants were present at the TVA
lake.

I spent part of the day today, 6 July, photographing
butterflies and dragonflies on a farm in Larue County
with Floridians Lyn and Brooks Atherton who are up
visiting relatives.  Birding hi-lites were a
nesting Savannah Sparrow in a Red Clover field with
nesting Grasshopper Sparrows, and four Loggerhead
Shrikes.  

Butterflies of particular interest were Ocola Skipper
and Bronze Copper.  The Ocola Skipper, a rare late
colonizer from the south, is nearly two months earlier
than the previous early Kentucky record according to
the Annotated Checklist of Butterflies and Moths of
Kentucky.
