Amy and I went up to the Gorge area on Sunday ... didn't make it up there
until early afternoon, but there was still quite a bit of activity along the
the Rock Bridge Loop and Swift Camp Creek trails in Wolfe County. All of
the expected neotrop summer residents were accounted for save Louisiana
Waterthrush and Scarlet Tanager, of which we did not get a glimpse or hear a
peep (I don't think I usually hear Kentucky here and we did not this day).
We did hear nice, close songs from two Swainson's Warblers, one past the old
log dam on the Swift Camp Creek trail and the other in the tributary ravine
above Rock Bridge, sort of just below the parking area. We also were
surprised to still hear two singing male Red-breasted Nuthatches ... one was
amazing persistent in the vicinity of the jcts of the Rock Bridge Loop and
the beginning of the Swift Camp Creek trail. How neat it is to hear these
little fellows yaaaaaaaaaaaank --- yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaank ---
yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaank on and one in their slow, drawn out tone. Other
warblers observed/heard included Northern Parula, Black-throated Green
(juvs), Yellow-throated, Pine, Black-and-white (juvs), Worm-eating (juvs),
Ovenbird (juv), and Hooded (many). On the way back west, we took KY 613
following the Red River out and added American Redstarts (juvs), Com
Yellowthroat, and Yel-br Chats.
