This is the Kentucky Bird Line, sponsored by the Kentucky Ornithological
Society. This update is current as of July 28, 2002 at 5:00 PM EDT. The
highlights of this update are: the continued presence of Scissor-tailed
Flycatchers in Lyon County and a report of a Tri-colored Heron in Pike
County.
The nesting pair of Scissor-tailed Flycatchers continues to be observed
below Barkley Dam. Due to the height of the nest, essentially nothing is
known about its contents. The most recent observation was on July 27th when
both adults were observed on and around the nest itself. The nest is
located in a utility tower below the dam on the Lyon County side of the
River.
On July 19th, a single Tri-colored Heron was reported along Johnson Creek in
Pike County. The bird has not bee relocated and no further details are
available on this bird. Another interesting sighting from Eastern Kentucky
was the observation of 3 Common Loons on Cave Run Lake on July 21st.
Fall migration is beginning to pick up a little steam, but shorebird habitat
is scarce in the state. Reports of migrant shorebirds this week include:
a.. 7 species of migrant shorebird at a pond just north of the Reelfoot
National Wildlife Refuge including 50 Least Sandpipers, 15 Stilt Sandpipers,
3 Western Sandpipers, & 150 Pectoral Sandpipers,
b.. 5 species of migrant shorebirds at Paradise/Peabody Wildlife
Management Area including 4 Pectoral Sandpipers and 6 Semipalmated
Sandpipers,
c.. 3 Species of migrant shorebirds at Fishing Creek in Pulaski County
including about 10 Pectoral Sandpipers and about 10 Spotted Sandpipers, and
d.. A Stilt Sandpiper at Meng Pond in Warren County, A spotted Sandpiper
at Minor Clark Fish Hatchery in Rowan County, and a Solitary Sandpiper at a
pond in Logan County.
Other species of interest reported this week Include 5 Black Terns a 3 Great
Egrets and a Pied-billed Grebe at the TVA Paradise Lake, the first report of
a Eurasian Collared-Dove at Barbourville in Knox County, and Mississippi
Kites, common wading species, and 72 Wood Ducks at various locations in
Fulton County.
Thanks for calling the Kentucky Bird Line. You may leave a report after the
tone. Please include your name, the date, the location, and the time of
your observation when filing a report. If your report contains rare or out
of season species, please send appropriate documentation to the
