A stop below Barkley Dam this morning found one of the
Scissor-tailed Flycatchers incubating. I didn't see
the other bird during the few minutes that I was
there, but it was probably taking a break from the
heat and resting in the shade of one of the trees. I
was able to obtain a few photos of a tail sticking out
of the nest about 130-150 feet above the ground. These
birds won't have to worry about cats, squirrels, or
racoons raiding the nest!

The number of Ring-billed Gulls has increased recently
with approximately 250 in the vicinity of Kentucky
Dam, and another 200 at Smithland. A few Caspian Terns
were also present below Smithland Dam as was a
juvenile Bald Eagle.

Shorebird habitat was really hard to find in Fulton
County, with a pond just northeast of the Long Point
Unit of Reelfoot being the only place I found a
concentration of birds. Present there this afternoon
were approximately:

150+ Pectoral Sandpipers
15 Stilt Sandpipers
3 Western Sandpipers
5 Semipalmated Sandpipers
50 Least Sandpipers
Spotted Sandpiper
6 Lesser Yellowlegs

Several flocks of migrating Pectoral Sandpipers were
seen moving south over the lower Hickman Bottoms and
along the Mississippi River.

The best concentration of waders was at Island 8
Slough where in excess of 700 Great Egrets were having
easy pickings in the receding water. A few immature
Little Blue Herons and Cattle Egrets were also present
there.

Several Least Terns and Mississippi Kites were
observed along the river.

Dave
