Was up doing a brief aerial survey of the lower Ohio and Mississippi rivers
today with the Ky. Dept. of Fish and Wildlife Resources.

A few highlights included:  

A flock of 120 or more Am. White Pelicans loafing on a sandbar on the Miss
River upstream from Hickman, Fulton Co.

Probably in excess of FIFTY Great Egret nests in the heronry near the
confluence of Bayou de Chien and Little Bayou de Chien in Fulton Co.  The
number of Great Egrets continues to increase at this site.

A few nests of Great Egrets in the once flourishing and then recently
abandoned Middle Bar Great Blue heronry along the Miss R in Hickman Co.

Great Egrets appear to have dispersed far and wide already as small numbers
were seen throughout the wetland areas surveyed.

The pair of Mute Swans that nested in a swamp along Cypress Creek in
Muhlenberg County last year were present at the same location but did not
appear to have any young.

Least Tern nesting habitat looks to be abundant on the Mississippi.  If it
will hold at the current level, much successful nesting should occur, but a
farther drop will allow access to nesting areas by ATVs and coyotes.

The two Scissor-tailed Flycatcher nesting territories REALLY look close
together when viewed from about 1000 feet up in the air :o)
