[birdky] BKY: Lick Creek Trail

I hiked/birded the Lick Creek and Falls trail (trail #631) in the DBNF,
McCreary Co. this morning. It sprinkled rain throughout most of the walk to the
falls with only occasional drips making it to me through the trees. This was my
first time to walk this particular trail; it started on the ridgetop going
through hardwood/dead pine habitat and descended to hemlock, rhododendron (only
a few blossoms left), magnolias and ferns etc. The trail crisscrossed the
stream several times and huge boulders and rockhouses added to the magic. By
the time I had made my way to the falls it had REALLY started raining. A seat
on one of the boulders beneath the shelter of the overhanging cliff listening
to the waterfall was a good place to sit out the downpour. After a time it
became clear that I had enjoyed as much peace, solitude and meditation as I
needed for one day, so I began to retrace my steps back on the trail. Walking
in the rain in July is not an unpleasant experience. Shortly, another thing
became increasingly clear . . . . . . my raincoat leaked! It was a really
pretty trail and I recommend it, if you're in the area.
Species seen were few. Included were:
Ruffed Grouse
Belted Kingfisher
Blue-headed & Red-eyed Vireo
Black-throated Green Warbler
Worm-eating Warbler
Hooded Warbler
Louisiana Waterthrush
Scarlet Tanager
~Roseanna~
