18 June 2007 (back from vacation)

6:30AM to Noon
68º Partly cloudy, to overcast and occasional very light rain, to 82º

I visited 268 slough, Horseshoe Road slough, Grassy Pond/Powell's Lake Unit, Pond Creek Marsh, Shorebird Unit, and Hardy Slough.

Highlights:
the usual suspects and

Wood duck family of 2 females and 5 young at 268 slough
Hooded merganser female at PCM
Bald Eagle near the nest and a good sized juvenal on nest edge at PCM
Am. Coot at Ohio River edge Union Co.

Notes on water levels:
268 slough is less than half the size it was 2 weeks ago; nothing but killdeer and great blue herons

Horseshoe Road slough: 3 pools left, down to 1/10th its size 2 weeks ago; killdeer, great blue herons and several groups of mallards

Grassy Pond/Powell's lake unit water is still too high for any shorebirds

Pond Creek Marsh water level is very low, killdeer and a single mallard (no Moorhens seen or heard)

Shorebird Unit: low water level, no birds, part of the area covered by water in the spring has been disked (disced?? sp?) up

Hardy Slough: one large area of water left, Great Blue Herons and Great Egrets and Killdeer. As with the SbU part disked up area. The top of the dam has been graded and the gate was open.

================================================

Non-Kentucky birds seen on vacation (4 June through 11 June 2007).

My wife and I headed to western South Dakota. We did the Badlands, Black Hills, Devil's Tower, Wyoming, Custer State Park, and Wind Cave National Park.

While this was not a birding vacation (my wife is barely interested in birding) I did keep my binoculars with me and used them.

Life birds for me:

Western Meadowlark
American Dipper
Black-headed Grosbeak
Western Tanager
Black-billed Magpie
White-winged Junco
White-throated Swift
Violet-green Swallow
Yellow-rumped Warbler (Audubon's)
Red-breasted Nuthatch
Black-capped Chickadee
Spotted Towhee
Northern Flicker (Red-shafted)
Mountain Bluebird
