[birdky] BKY: nesting egrets, herons

Canoeing around the island in Barkley Lake off of Kuttawa Landing
late yesterday afternoon looked like a page out of Dr. Seuss' book
THE SNEETCHES!!
Hundreds of cattle egret, a few less of black-crowned night herons
and little blue herons, plus a couple of snowy egrets were sqawking,
barking, and screeching. Fuzzy chicks of all stages were staggering
around their nests and branches trying to maintain their real estate
as well as their "room service". Quite smelly up close!!
This is a tiny island. I guess that the trees on the island will
eventually die due to the excess bird droppings? Meanwhile it is a
paradise nursery for these species. Did not see any great egrets or
great blue herons or comorants nesting there--they must have their
own housing code.
LBL offers this guided canoe trip annually after the chicks have
hatched. They provide canoes and a guide. It was a very good
experience. Sid and I enjoyed it.
