Three members from the Northern Kentucky Bird Club enjoyed a trip to the Outer
Banks of North Carolina this past week. Areas visited included Great Dismal
Swamp NWR in Virginia, Alligator River NWR, Bodie Island, Pea Island NWR, and
Cape Point. On May 31 we took one of Brian Patteson's pelagic trips out to the
Gulf Stream. Birds seen on the boat trip included Black-capped Petrel, Fea's
Petrel, five species of shearwaters (Cory's, Greater, Sooty, Manx, and
Audubon's), Wilson's Storm-Petrel, Band-rumped Storm-Petrel, Northern Gannet,
Pomarine Jaeger, South Polar Skua, and Bridled Tern. Leach's Storm-Petrel was
alson seen on the trip but missed by our group. Pilot Whales, Bottlenose
Dolphins, and a very large Manta Ray added to the trip experience. Landbirding
highlights included Glossy Ibis, nesting Piping Plover, Snowy Plover (rare in
NC), American Oystercatcher, Marbled Godwit, Red Knot, Swainson's Warbler
(Great Dismal Swamp), and Seaside Sparrow (Pea Island). We tallied 130
species of birds on the trip.
