It has been a whirlwind two weeks for me between putting up hay on the
family farm and doing field work.
Some misc highlights ...
On June 10th, Mark Monroe and I had a great count of 8 Common Moorhens at
the Camp Mines complex in Union Co as well as lingering Semi Plover, Semi
Spipers, and Dunlin in Henderson and Union cos.
On June 11th, I had a couple of male Bobolinks on a BBS route in Washington
County.
On June 13th, Mark and I met up with some of the folks working with
Golden-winged Warblers in Harlan Co. and got to see a couple of birds on
territory along with a Blue-winged Warbler nest. Those coal-mined mountain
tops sure are different when the mining is completed!
On June 13th, Mark and I visited the summit of Black Mountain, Harlan Co.
and located a Least Flycatcher nest with 3 young in addition to the regulars
including a fledgling Veery and a nest of Chestnut-sided Warblers containing
4 small young. There sure are a lot more Least Flys up there than there used
to be!
On the night of June 20th, we did an emergence count of gray bats at a cave
in Barren County .... 37,353 bats is A LOT!
On June 21st, we had a late White-rumped Sandpiper and a pair of Spotted
S'pipers still at the slough on Horseshoe Road, w. Henderson Co.
Most recently we have been assisting in conducting Least Tern nest surveys
on lower Ohio and Mississippi rivers with Ky Fish and Wildlife and Missouri
Dept of Conservation ... 3 colonies on the Ohio River of 5-10 pairs (Hancock
Co, KY/Spencer Co, IN); 41+ nests (Pope Co., IL waters adjacent to
Livingston Co.); and 5 nests (Ballard Co); 16 nests at a colony along the
lower Tennessee River (Marshall Co.); at least 4 nests off the river in
Union Co.; and nest counts of 16, 127, 137, and 331 on traditional sites on
the Miss River. Other observations during these surveys have included up to
18 Ring-billed Gulls and 3 Caspian Terns on the lower Ohio River 24 June; 5
Black Terns and 5 Am White Pelicans on Missouri bars just below Hickman, Ky.
