Hello, I am new to the list. My name is Diane and I live in NE KY. I hope I am
subscribed and this goes through. I am having a lot of trouble identifying a
bird that I saw on our farm a few days ago. I walked into my garden to check
the sprinkler. Sitting under a tomato plant was a large, but young bird. It was
getting wet from the sprinkler, but still stayed very still. I noticed a large
head with dark eyes set far back, a large curved black beak, long wings and a
very long tail with a heart shape on the end of it. The tail reminded me of a
dragon tail. That is the only way I can think to describe it. I'm having
problems remembering the color, but I think it was grayish on top and maybe
white underneath. It seemed to be a young bird just learning to fly as when I
got closer it flew off, but seemed like flying was new to it. The head kind of
looked like it had a crown, but the bird was wet and it had the young look
where the feathers are still fluffy and it may have just been fluffed up
feathers on the head. I'm sorry about this description, but I can't think of
any other way to describe it. It was large, maybe 8 inches from beak to tail.
Does anyone at all know what I might have seen? I've been scouring the net and
my bird id books and have not found a bird like this at all. Please help.
Thanks.
Diane Plummer
