Saturday afternoon we encountered a Horned Owl in our woods too weak to fly but
a short distance. Sunday morning I found it dead near where we had last seen
it. It seemed to be an adult bird and had no obvious injuries. While trying to
relocate the owl, I checked out a nearby hollow cherry tree to see if it might
be there. There was a mama Racoon and at least 2 baby Racoons sleeping in the
hollow tree. Some dangling vines were preventing a clear photo-op of the
Racoons. Yanking down the vines roused a nearby sleeping deer, who snorted in
protest as he departed.
We have lots of Bobwhites but I have never been able to get a picture of
one until a couple of days ago. A male was perched on the barn lot gate
singing. I was able to raise the kitchen window without startling it and
photograph it from a range of about 50 ft.
Sunday morning I saw a Cowbird perched on a cow's nose. She seemed to take no
note of it and continued to rest and chew her cud.
