[birdky] Kestrel flies coop, etc.

Yesterday, while hoeing my tobacco for the second time, I heard a Kestrel
making a different noise than usual. I could see an adult sitting on the power
line near the barn but it was just sitting there quietly. The nest box is on
the opposite side of the barn from the tobacco patch, so I walked around to see
what the commotion was. As I approached, the adult Kestrel began calling and
the previous calling ceased. A young Kestrel was sitting on the perch pole
mounted outside the nest box. As soon as I came into its view, it took off on
its first flight. I haven't been able to make a head count yet but there is
likely more than one. This is some later than average for the little guys to
leave the nest box.
One or two Purple Martins have been visiting daily. Every time I see them I
promise them that I will do better in future about keeping the nest box clean
but I'm not sure they believe me.
At least one pair of Bobwhites has succeeded in hatching some chicks. We
almost stepped on some little ones a few days back while walking through a
recently cut hay field.
Two pairs of Dickcissels have relocated here lately. My farm never seems to
be their first choice in May. I always seem to get refugees from other people's
hay fields later in the spring.
