Carter Hooks and I visited Chaney Lake in Warren
County on June 20 to find only a small pond
approximately 75 feet in diameter remaining. The pond
was crammed with ducks, mostly young Mallards of every
age class. Upon our arrival, the females escorted the
young into the nearby woods for cover.
Also present were 2 broods of Blue-winged Teal with
the mothers remaining in the pond with them. Other
waterfowl included a Hooded Merganser, at least a
couple of broods of young Wood Ducks, and
eclipse-plumaged male Wood Ducks and Mallards.
There were no Pied-billed Grebes observed.
