I visited my parents' farm in N. Warren County this weekend, and had a
couple of birding treats.

First, while I was walking around the pond with Mom & Dad, I was surprised
to hear the call of a Grasshopper Sparrow. With a little searching, I was
able to finally find the singer perched on a fence post. This is the first
time I've ever seen or heard Grasshopper Sparrows on the farm (at least
since I learned to recognize their calls).

Then, on Sunday, a group of 5 juvenile Blue Jays descended en mass on the
platform feeder in the front yard. They obviously hadn't fledged too long
ago, as you could still see some down sticking out of their otherwise adult
feathers. The neatest part was that they were just starting to grow the
feathers that will soon form their crests. With the scruffy feathers on the
backs of their heads, they reminded me of grungy teenagers experimenting
with weird hairstyles!
