For the past 8 years, Mitch Sturgeon and I, president and =
dictator-for-life of the Hart County Birders Org, have been running 2 =
BBS-type routes in Mammoth Cave National Park. One is a normal 50-stop =
route, the other only has 33 stops because of a shortage of passable =
roads north of the Green River. I've been tracking numbers of certain =
key species. Most of these are neotropical migrants. Most nest in deep =
woods, the specialty habitat of this park. I included cowbirds for =
obvious reasons. The attached file, guaranteed virus-free, shows results =
since 1995. I don't think the real populations fluctuate as much as the =
data seems to indicate. A one-day sample has many variables that can =
affect it. In any case, the numbers look encouraging.
For those not doing BBS routes, it's a great way to bird and get a feel =
for what the bird populations in an area are. If you're interested in =
nationwide data, check http://www.mp2-pwrc.usgs.gov/bbs/=20
