Mark Monroe, Mark Vukovich, and I birded all day and part of the night on
June 1, hitting Sinclair WMA, Muhlenberg Co., LBL, Ky and Barkley dams, and
the lower Hickman bottoms of Fulton Co. We talled 133 species (131 by all
three of us).
Highlights were as follows:
At Kentucky Dam, three spp of terns remaining including about 6 adult Common
Terns; 6 first-year Forster's Terns, and 1-2 first-year Caspian Terns. Only
gulls were Ringers. Gulls and terns as well as family groups of Canada
Geese were seen catching periodic cicadas!! The emergence is now in FULL
swing, with dozens in the air and zillions in the trees. MM picked out a
soaring Miss Kite W and then SW of Ky Dam Village.
Western Fulton Co. (only heard ONE cicada on the eastern side of Hickman,
otherwise, seemed to thin out west of Mayfield): Mud Creek at KY 94 had some
shorebirds including 3 White-rumped and a Spotted. In the lower Hickman
bottoms, we were disappointed not to see any Black-necked Stilts, but we did
get scattered groups of Semi Sps; some White-rumped Sps; 20 Semi Plovers,
and 4 Dunlin. Least Terns were scattered about in ag land (the river is
still quite high). Some farmers have lost much of their early-planted corn
crop to the seep water under the levee, which still exists in scattered
pools from the TN state line to up near Hickman. We saw at least four
separate broods of Hooded Mergansers, 1 male Blue-winged Teal, and 3 male
Ruddy Ducks (I guess all the Ruddy Ducks lately are simply representing late
migrants???). Waders (other than Great Egrets) remain scarce in western
Fulton Co., although we did see a few Little Blues and Cattle Egrets, and
one Snowy Egret.
