Greetings
My wife and I have just retired to the 90 wooded acres where she was born
and raised on the Morgan/Magoffin line near the community of Caney. I've
been vacationing here for a month and have already seen a life time's worth
of birds!
RBGs-we had up to 6 males. Found it curious how gentle they were at the
feeders compared to the other species. Also noticed that they didn't fly
off when I'd go to fill the feeders-as if used to people. Wonder if they
winter in densely populated areas.
Redstarts-10 days ago just before dusk, I was finishing clearing some
walking paths on old logging roads. 2 males began to conduct "flight
training" maneuvers right in front of me. Without ever making a single
sound, they continued to fly in a loop about 30' feet in diameter thru
thickets and small trees. Center was a large multi-flora rose where they
may have nests.
Part of the loop involved flying straight toward me only to veer off to the
same direction every time. If one would land, the second would zoom in and
off they'd go on the same circuit again. What a sight!!-but never a sound.
The entire flight path never exceeded 10 feet from the ground.
Who has been sleeping in my gravel driveway? At least twice this spring I
have driven our .8 mile driveway to pick up mail after dark only to flush a
brown bird. I can often see the creature which insists on holding its place
until I am only a few feet away.
We have abundant whip poor wills. No Killdeers. The most recent flushing
was the gravel drive next to our one third acre lawn. American Wood Cock
doing his dance?
Saw first Balt/Northern Oriole yesterday.
