Mark Monroe and I spent some time in western Henderson County Friday
afternoon. Our best bird was a quite tardy, singing Vesper Sparrow northeast
of Sauerheber by a few miles. The Sauerheber shorebird unit flock had
diminished greatly since mid-week. Best birds were 10 Dunlin. The KY 268
slough still had a very nice flock, although phalaropes were no more there
as well. We happened to meet up with several other birders who had had the
same idea for work on Friday (i.e., not to go!). Shorebirds -- again mostly
at the western end -- include 60+ Semi Plovers; 6 White-rumps; 4 Long-billed
Dowitchers; 75 Dunlin; and 4 Stilt Sandpipers. A male Red-breasted Merg was
an unexpected migrant on another slough of water out farther west.
A quick stop at Lake Peewee yielded a lake now devoid of birds save for two
Spotted Sandpipers, single Am Coot and Pied-billed Grebe, and 3 D-cr
Cormorants.
We ended the day at the Sinclair Unit and Paradise Ash Basins. Here we
encountered our best fortune of the day in running into Ben and Mary (who
had mustered the integrity to go to work for at least half of such a
beautiful day) ... we were able to share in their Piping Plover find ...
first viewed on the upper ash basin; later on the lower lake flats. Other
birds of interest in the vicinity included a Stilt Sandpiper and a high- and
direct-flying flock of 43 Blue Jays ... heading due north towards the power
plant from the woodland on the southern margin of the ash basins area.
