Yesterday, Friday May 6, at Boone County Cliffs, I had about 40 species of
birds. Highlights included a five thrush day -- VEERY, HERMIT THRUSH,
SWAINSON'S THRUSH, WOOD THRUSH, and AMERICAN ROBIN -- a pair of NORTHERN
BOBWHITE up to springtime activities, my life-sighting of a WORM-EATING
WARBLER chasing off an EASTERN TOWHEE from his territory (this followed an
hour-long dialogue with unseen Worm-eating Warblers), and a fine selection
of spring warblers. I've never been in a woodlands area with so many
BROWN-HEADED COWBIRDS around, obviously listening as intently to warbler
songs as I was - it was disconcerting.
This was my first birding visit to Kentucky, and I really enjoyed this park.
It seemed appropriate that the first PILEATED WOODPECKER I had seen since
the discovery of its long-lost cousin (IBWO) should be on Nature
Conservancy-protected land! I also like that the Cliffs is accessible to
the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky airport. I hope to return some day for
more birding.
