[birdky] Help with Carolina Chickadee

Hello all, maybe you can help me figure this one out.

I checked on my chickadees yesterday and found 3 young (alive and well), one
un-hatched egg, and three dead young pushed out of the main cup of the nest
but still in the nest box.

There appears to be no injuries that I can see. One of the young was smaller
than the other two. I don't see the reason why this would happen. No HOSP
around because I made the entrance hole smaller to keep them out.

We have had near freezing temps here at night. Do they ever sacrifice their
young? For lack of food/ warmth?

I'm perplexed.
