[birdky] Slough of questions

Hi all:

Normally, I just lurk the bird line, but a day in the Saberhagen slough at
Henderson has left me with questions I can't answer, so here's my first post.

I'll list the birds I saw at the end, but I definately got my first Wilson's
phalarope - in breeding plummage, easy to identify even at a bit of a
distance. But later, at another multi-shore bird disappearing mudflat, were two
"guys"
I'm stumped on. They were: definately shore birds; definanately not stilts:
white in general with grey backs: sharply black on the sides of the face but
NOT down the neck; last look I got in the right light, there was a red blush
beginning down the front of the neck of one.

After consulting Sibley's, looking again, Sibley's again, etc., I decided
they (there were 2) were red-necked phalaropes in non-breeding colors, but
after
getting home and investigating further, I'm not so sure. perhaps they were
Wilson's in a pummage that's just not shown.

Ideas?

Anyway, the day was wonderful. Among the birds:

Greater yellowlegs
Lesser yellowlegs
Dunlin
Semi-palm plovers
solitary sandpipers
Prothonotry wabler
White=eyed vireos (a pair, nest-building)
Indigo bunting (many s's)
orchard orioles
balt. orioles
wood duck
hooded merganser (2 males, one displaying, one not, and a female)
blue-winged teal
bald eagle
common yellowthroat
ruby-throated hummer
northern waterthrush
white-throated sp.
white-crowned sp.
chipping sp.
great blue
flicker
downy
red-bellied
snipe
chickadee
titmouse
gnatcatcher
canada goose
kingfisher
and all the black birds you could shake a stick at.

Ended my day at my mom's home in the middle of Owensboro, and there was a
rose-brested grosbeak, (m) right on Ky derby schedule.

Thanks - Kate Hannah
O'boro, Ky

(PS - does anyone know if "Charlie", who usually posts from the Henderson
sloughs, is OK? I haven't seen anything from him in over a month)
