[birdky] RPT: Misc info and observations

Most of you should have now received your February 2004 issue of The Ky
Warbler. I would like to point out the "solution" to an obvious error in the
text of the field note on nesting Gadwall and Ruddy Duck, pp. 32-35. There
are two lines of text between the sets of photos of the Gadwalls and Ruddy
Ducks on p. 33. This text belongs between the words "was" and "male" at the
beginning of the second line on p. 34. Some probably figured this out, but I
thought I would clarify. Ahhh word processing in the technology age of the
21st Century :o(
While doing frog surveys in southern Hardin County yesterday evening, I came
across an extensive colony of Henslow's Sparrows. The field, which is
probably more than 200 acres in size, is on the north side of KY 84, about
2.5-3.0 road miles west-northwest of the town of Sonora. I could hear 15-20
birds from the roadside, and would guess there could easily be 30-50 or more
territorial males there. This field looks to hold potential for Sedge Wrens
later in the summer and interesting raptors in winter and perhaps even a
nesting Northern Harrier or Short-eared Owl if it remains in it's current
state of land use for very long.
I'm stealing a bit of her thunder, but she deserves lots of credit for a
state-first find, so I want to relate that KOS member Laura Patton has found
the state's first ever Golden-winged Warbler nests (not just one, but two so
far!) during follow-up work to her Atlas survey work last spring/summer.
Laura and associates will have a field note on last year's results in an
upcoming Warbler and I look forward to seeing something else published on
the nests.
Also, members Eddie and Jennifer Huber who live in southeastern Jefferson
County still had TWO Purple Finches at their feeders as of this past
weekend. One has conjunctivitis and you have to wonder if it will leave? The
other seems healthy. The state's late spring date is 25 May 1982 -- back in
the "good ole days" of lots of Purple Finches.
