Driving the George Washington Parkway in VA can produce some interesting
views of Great Black-backed Gulls and other species, Theodore Roosevelt
Island can produce some birds as well.  There is a roost of
Black-crowned Night-Herons at the National Zoo in DC itself and the
Tidal Basin offers views of gulls and terns, and possibly swallows.

I was there about 1 month ago and did birding only on the side as I was
the guide for family sight-seeing.

if you find yourself in the dc area on a sunday, there is a nice group
that meets at 8:00am at the visitor center on the virginia side of great
falls national park. the great falls refers to the Potomoc River.
