We spent several hours at the Sloughs this afternoon.  A good many roads were 
flooded and we didn't see any shorebirds but did have an interesting afternoon. 
There were 17 Great Egrets at the first side road when we came in and others 
scattered around.  We spotted a Whipoorwill sleeping on a branch in a dead 
tree.  It was a first for us.  The wildlife biologist said something had 
probably disturbed him earlier and he had moved to the tree from the ground.  
Has anyone else observed them sleeping in trees?  We also saw our first brood 
of baby killdeer.  The mother couldn't get them all across the road and I 
finally had to shoo them across so we could drive through.  One of the adults 
and a juvenile  were present on the  Bald Eagle's nest.
