[birdky] Report 17 May 2002
- From: David Roemer <dlroemer@xxxxxxxxx>
- To: bird ky <birdky@xxxxxxxxxxxxx>
- Date: Fri, 17 May 2002 17:04:04 -0700 (PDT)
Species of particular interest present today at
Morgan's Pond:
Red-necked Phalarope (5) Four females in alternate
plumage and one male in alternate or female in molt.
They were a long way off and I didn't walk through the
mud.
Whimbrel (4) I saw these when I first arrived, but
couldn't find them again before I left. They may still
be present but in an area I couldn't see.
Black-bellied Plover
Semipalmated Plover
Killdeer
Spotted Sandpiper
Ruddy Turnstone (17)
Semipalmated Sandpiper (150+)
Least Sandpiper
White-rumped Sandpiper
Dunlin (50)
Stilt Sandpiper
Birds of interest below Kentucky Dam:
Caspian Tern (6)
Common Tern (20+)
Forster's Tern (30+)
Black Tern (10)
Laughing Gull 1 adult and 1 2nd winter
The rain we are receiving may again cause McElroy Lake
to form in 3-4 days. The ditch and some mud around the
springs were all that remained yesterday. A few common
shorebirds were present as well as several ducks. Most
notable was the male Pintail which has been present
and may be injured (carrying some shot) although I
have seen it fly.
Chaney Lake remains and a few common shorebirds have
been present there as well as Blue-winged Teal,
Shovelers, and Pied-billed Grebes. The grebes are
probably nesting there as they have in the past.
