Eileen Wicker posted about the heron rookery (9 nests) in Lake Forest. I
stopped by there today on my way home from a funeral at a church on Hwy 22.
Here are directions, which I HOPE are correct. This is from Gene Snyder
Freeway. Take Old Henry Rd exit and go east. Go about half mile, past traffic
light, and turn right into Lake Forest subdivision onto Arnold Palmer Blvd..
Follow that road and turn left onto Champion Lake Place (there is a big flag
right across from the entrance to that road). Then turn left onto Long Creek
Way. Go all the way to the end and park there in the culdesac.

There may be another entrance from the west to get to Arnold Palmer Blvd., but
I was coming from Highway 22.

There are two viewing platforms. Go to the closest and the nests are right
there, up in the tree to the left of the end of the walkway.

At first, I saw no movement. Then could see heads sticking out. After about 20
minutes, some of the birds stood up and stretched a bit. Got photos, but light
was poor.

Only other bird of note was red-bellied woodpecker, busy working in tree next
to the nests. Wildflowers were coming up - trillium, spring beauty, dogtooth
violets, etc., and in another week should be in full splendor - if the rains do
not wash them away..
