There are a pair of barred owls hooting in the woods across from the house,
both tonight and last night. In 2001 a pair nested in a tree in those woods
and fledged two. Wood ducks nest every year in the overgrown lot next to my
house and I have seen them a couple of times in the last few weeks, as has my
neighbor. I heard my first wood thrush tonight. My daughter saw our first
hummingbird Friday but he must have just been passing through because he's not
still coming to the feeders. I travel in Western Kentucky with my job, and
today I saw a nesting pair of mute swans. The nest was hugh, one swan was
sitting on the nest and the other swimming next to it. They were absolutely
magnificent and the nest was right next to the rural road, so I just stopped on
the road and watched them for a while. I don't know how welcome they are in
the Commonwealth since they are an introduced species, so I hesitate to give
their location over the hotline, but if you don't feel inclined to destroy the
nest, please contact me directly for specific location. My brother-in-law,
Ken, told this story at our Easter gathering. He had 3 workers in to pour
concrete in his Newport home (not close to any woods) and had gone to McDonalds
to pick up their lunch. When he got out of his van, he had a bag of food in
one hand, a bag of drinks in the other, and a french fry hanging out of his
mouth. He closed the van door with his foot and turned to go inside, when a
small yellow bird landed on his shirt and began to eat the other end of the
fry. Ken said the bird ate several pieces before he let go of his end and it
flew away with lunch. He couldn't identify the bird. Internal Virus Database is out-of-date.
