The correct answer to the February photo quiz is three
species. This flock of gulls is comprised of four
Herring, an adult Lesser Black-backed, and the
remainder Ring-billed.
The Herring Gulls are an adult (upper left) and three
first-winter birds (dark birds upper right). The
adult may be a fourth-winter (1st adult plumage) as
indicated by the extent of dark on the bill. Although
most adult Herrings develop a dark area near the gonys
during winter, they are not usually as extensive as on
this bird and it may be an indication of immaturity.
The Lesser Black-backed is the dark-mantled bird among
the immature Herrings.
