Amy and I attended the spring meeting of the Ky Soc of Natural History this
weekend. The fantastic weather allowed for endless hikes in the greening
forest. Wildflowers aplenty on the lower slopes near the river. I think all
the flowers are now caught up and maybe even ahead of schedule! At least 16
spp of butterflies.

We had 14 spp of warblers (most in the BSFNRRA)including 3 Blue-winged; 1
Orange-crowned; 3 No Parula; sev. Yellow-rumped, Worm-eating, Ovenbird and
La Waterthrush; many Yellow-throated, Black-throated Green (including two
females already gathering nest material), Pine, Black-and-white and Hooded;
scattered Prairies, and at least 1 Cerulean.  Other songbirds of interest
included many Blue-headed Vireos, sev Scarlet Tanagers and Red-eyed,
Yellow-throated and White-eyed vireos, a singing Purple Finch, and 2 Pine
Siskins. Eight to 10 Whip-poor-wills lulled us to sleep in the Blue Heron
campground each night. I had not been down in the BSF area in a few years
and the change in habitat that has occurred because of the 1999-2000 pine
beetle infestation is truly remarkable.
