I finally had a chance to get to the Fish Hatchery yesterday.  I could have
used some more interesting birds but I'm not complaining about the gorgeous
weather.

Here's what I saw:

Pied-billed Grebe
Hooded Mergansers (female) - 2
Scaup (Couldn't tell if it was Greater or Lesser) - (female) - 1
Buffleheads - (female) - 2
Blue-winged Teal - 2 male, 1 female
Canada Geese
Mallards
Green Heron
Great Blue Heron
Great Egret
Song Sparrow
Eastern Bluebirds
Red-winged Blackbirds
Bald Eagle - (one adult, one juvenile)
Osprey
Kestrel 
Belted Kingfishers
Tree Swallows
Northern Flickers (3)
Killdeer
Solitary Sandpiper

There were other swallows there....I'm thinking Barn Swallow but I really
didn't get a good look and am pretty lousy with Swallows.

There were only Canada Geese at the Observation Pond down the road.



On a side note locally the Eastern Phoebes returned as did the Tree Swallows
at Marydale Retreat Center (Boone County).

On Monday (4/4/05) my husband called to tell me there were some "different
ducks" at Eagle Creek Golf Course (Grant County).  Keep in mind that he is a
retired Federal Officer who could give excellent descriptions of suspects
but gave me the most scrambled description of the ducks I'd ever seen.  Upon
showing him pictures, he couldn't pick the duck "out of the lineup".  I
couldn't take it any more and drove down there to see for myself.   There
were 4 Northern Shovelers.....3 male and 1 female.   I need to do a little
work with him if he's going to help me find birds!!!
