Time: 1850 CDT

I stepped though the door from the kitchen to the small enclosed back
porch leading to the outside and stopped dead in my tracks.There on
the ground at my feet ,picking up particles from the grass were:

7 White-crowned Sparrows

It's dusk. in, fact, very dusk. It's dripping rain and the temperature
is 40 degrees F. Sky is heavily overcast.I don't think they would have 
caught my attention before I stepped outside had it not been for the pure 
white streaks on the crowns of a couple of the birds. I had to
to look closely to see the tan and brown streaks on the rest of the birds.
It's that magical time of the year when our wintering birds stop by in small 
groups on their way to nesting grounds in the far north.Yesterday
it was a flock of White-throated Sparrows with their plaintive calls from 
the tree line bordering the lane. At the same time a male Purple Finch was 
warbling his song from amidst the Elm tree upon which he feeds
this time of year.
