Matt Stickel and I birded Peabody WMA and points west today. It was such a nice
day that many birds were likely moving rather than resting.
Ken & Homestead Units Peabody WMA, Ohio Co.: our morning visited didn't yield
much in the way of raptors and the landbird populations seem to be particularly
depressed on the mines this late winter season. Highlights were a single
northbound Sandhill Crane and a pair of Northern Pintails.
Paradise & Sinclair Unit Peabody WMA, Muhlenberg Co.: 1 Horned Grebe, 2
Rough-legged Hawks (1 light/1 dark morph); 2 Loggerhead Shrikes (apparently
continuing on winter territories); surprisingly few Northern Harriers.
East Volunteer Mine & vic,, Hopkins Co.: 3 Rough-legged Hawks; 12-15 Red-tailed
Hawks including a really nice look at an adult rufous (intermediate) morph
calurus; several Northern Harriers and American Kestrels.
Clear Creek corridor, Hopkins Co.: nice look at intermediate or
dark-intermediate adult Harlan's Red-tailed Hawk (was present in same locale
last winter) ... it fanned its nearly all-white tail while stretching a wing
for us, Tree Swallow (heard), 2 Wood Ducks; 1ca. 5 Green-wg Teal.
Lake Peewee, Hopkins Co.: 165 Pied-billed Grebes, 14 male Red-breasted
Mergansers, and small numbers of Canvasbacks and Redheads were the highlights.
