Eastern Kentucky Bird Club members and guests are invited to participate
in a field trip this Saturday, March 10 to view waterfowl (and other
birds) at the South Shore WMA in Greenup County and the Lewis County
WMA. These two WMAs are about 15 minutes apart. The meeting place is
the McKell Elementary School in South Shore just off Route 23. The
school is probably the best landmark in the town and it is adjacent to
the highway. We will meet at the school at 10:00 am and travel to South
Shore WMA first which is about 1 mile south of town. The 96-acre South
Shore WMA is adjacent to the Ohio River and contains two manmade
wetlands that draw plenty of waterfowl. The 1,100-acre Lewis County WMA
is also adjacent to the Ohio River. A number of natural wetlands
created by beavers and natural low spots hold plenty of birds as well.
If we have time, I would like to show everyone the bank swallow colony
even though the birds are not back yet. Both areas provide fairly level
walking conditions. Please bring spotting scopes and waterproof boots
if you have them. Please contact me with any questions.
