Nine East Kentucky Bird Club members braved the weather today to visit
Lewis County WMA and South Shore WMA in Greenup County. The lightning
and rain limited the Lewis County WMA tour to about 1/3 of the wetlands.
Scott Marsh spotted a marsh wren in one of the wetlands. Wood ducks,
mallards, and a black duck flushed off but did not provide the best of
looks. Instead of further risking our lives at Lewis County, we
traveled to South Shore where the walk was much shorter to the wetlands.
The rain and lightning had subsided some by the time we reached South
Shore. A good diversity of waterfowl was present at the South Shore
wetlands. Species included mallards, black ducks, wood ducks,
green-winged teal, blue-winged teal, coots, hooded mergansers, and a
pair of wigeon. Shorebirds consisted of 4 killdeer and one least
sandpiper. Despite the weather I enjoyed meeting some new birding
friends who have great birding locations to share with us in the future.
