Mark,

One suggestion I would make would be to check out Raven Run Nature 
Sanctuary.  It is about 15 minutes outside of Lexington but usually provides 
some good birding.  With the colder weather we are having though I won't 
make any promises. There is little to no water there as most of it is just 
woodland trails and a few open fields.  I posted the directions below in 
case you are interested.

Via Richmond Road
Across from the Jacobson Park entrance, turn right onto Old Richmond Road 
(US25/421)
Go 3.5 miles and turn right onto Jacks Creek Road. Raven Run is 5.2 miles 
down Jacks Creek Road, on the left.

Via Tates Creek Road
Head away from town on Tates Creek Road, 8 miles past Man O War Blvd, turn 
left onto Spears Road.
Go 1.5 miles and turn right onto Jacks Creek Road, Raven Run is 1.5 miles 
down on the left.

From I?64/I-75
Take exit 99 (Old Richmond Road) on I-75, Head towards Lexington.
Turn left onto Jacks Creek Road (4.8 miles from the exit).
Raven Run is 5.2 miles down Jacks Creek Road, on the left.

Also, on Richmond Road going towards I-75 is Jacobson Park which usually 
provides a good place to see waterfowl and the occasional Osprey.  Good luck
