The correct answer to the Photo Quiz published on the
KOS website on 15 February is WESTERN MEADOWLARK.
  
This was admittedly a tough one, and attention to
detail of certain feather tracts is required for
identification.   The National Geographic Field Guide
to the Birds of North America, (I have the third
edition, fourth may be even better) has the best
treatment of distinguishing Eastern and Western
Meadowlarks as well as races of each of any reference
source in my library.

Page for Western Meadowlark with additional images and
discussion as well as images of Eastern Meadowlark for
comparison.  The original quiz photo is included.  I
will attempt to obtain images showing variation in
tail pattern of Eastern Meadowlark for inclusion at a
later date.
