For the past several months, I have been digging copious quanities of clay in
search of a suspected perched spring at the edge of my woods. My dig has
exposed a large rock with a projecting overhang. Months ago, I thought this
rock looked like a good place for a Phoebe nest. This morning, on my continued
but so far fruitless search for water midst the dirt (W.M.D.for short), I heard
twittering above me. I peered straight up from the dark recess of my dig to see
an Eastern Phoebe perched a few feet above my head, on the very spot which
looked to me to be a good Phoebe nest site. If my search for water fails, a new
nesting bird for my farm might be my consolation prize.
