The Yellow-billed loon was observed by Kara Hasenour (ABA #121) and
Chuck Mills (ABA #599!) of Newburgh, IN and by the author (ABA #562,
Cincinnati, OH) in the late afternoon. The bird was just at the
northern boundary of the NEXT inlet south about 600-800 yards out. It
would be difficult if not impossible to see it from the previously
mentioned areas with the choppy waters that existed today. If the bird
persists in this area, it is best to stay off the shore and stay
amongst the trees and walk all the way to the southern most point of
this stretch of trees (~.75-1 mile from the parking area). From here,
the bird is due east and can be observed from the tree line above the
shore giving some elevation which cuts the heat shimmer as well.

The bird never dove in the time it was observed (10-20 minutes). The
author had searched for the bird off and on since 9:30 AM and it was
finally discovered in the afternoon. It was not among any other loons
- though there were a scattering of well separated adult Commons and
one juvenile Common. The Horned Grebes were observed as well. Another
grebe was located which gave the appearance of a Red-necked Grebe but
with a much more petite bill than is expected of this species. The
trip through the woods yielded Downy WP, Red-bellied WP, Yellow-bellied
Sapsucker, Golden-crowned Kinglet, Tufted Titmouse, Eastern Bluebird,
Hermit Thrush, Brown Thrasher, Eastern Towhee, Dark-eyed Junco, and
Northern Cardinal.

American White Pelicans were observed earlier in the day below the dam
and from the "southern" outpost for spotting the loon. A lukewarm
search through the gulls at the dam did not reveal anything beyond
Ring-billed, Herring, and Bonaparte's Gulls.

Also, the road IS NOT MARKED 962 (at least going south it isn't)!
Rather I believe it may have been marked CR1150 or the like.
