Hap and I spent the weekend birding various areas of Pulaski, Wayne, Adair and
Taylor County. The focus of the weekend was to try to get Hap her life Northern
Saw-whet Owl. Our past attempts had been unsuccessful and our record remains
unblemished . . . . for once again, the owls were uncooperative! The
consultation prize was watching the AMERICAN WOODCOCK displays at Little Lick.
We enjoyed superb looks at a couple of birds that chose the middle of the road
to perform their peenting and strutting before flying up to display. The
headlights didn't seem to bother them at all. What little charmers!
Other highlights of the weekend were 20 waterfowl species including 3 SURF
SCOTERS (2 gorgeous males and a female at the Green River Marina), BLUE-WINGED
TEAL, RED-BREASTED MERGANSERS, GREATER SCAUP (a nice study of a raft of at
least 15), PINE WARBLERS, VESPER, CHIPPING and SAVANNAH SPARROWS and PURPLE
FINCHES.
