Approximately 185 Sandhill Cranes were present at
McElroy Lake in Warren Couny on Thursday, but the
number had dwindled to 7 as of yesterday evening,
March 7.  Previously reported waterfowl species were
observed, including 25 Snow Geese on the 6th, and Gr.
White-fronted Geese daily.

Dave Dunham and I checked McElroy yesterday evening,
and the viewing conditions were the best of the year. 
The air temperature finally warmed to where one could
identify birds across the lake without heat
distortion.  Pectoral Sandpipers were in good numbers,
100+, and we watched a flock of about 70 get up and
circle the lake, then head due north, still ascending
as they faded from sight in the scope.  A trio of Tree
Swallows was seen feeding over the water.

A hike in the hills north of Wysox Road on the Peabody
WMA in Ohio County yesterday yielded 2 Rough-legged
Hawks, one dark and on light, and lots of divers on
the impoundments in the area.  Ring-necked Duck,
Canvasback, Redhead, and Lesser Scaup were all present
in good numbers.  The Ross's Goose was still
associating with domestics at a pond along Union Hill
Road.
