[birdky] Whooping Cranes

I spoke with Danny Stone this evening, and received
details on the Whooping Cranes that he observed in
Tennessee as reported by Steve Stedman.

The pair was in a field along the Cumberland River
bottoms approximately 500 yards south of the Kentucky
state line with about 1500 Sandhills. One of the
birds was noticeably larger than the other, and one's
plumage was dingier, either due to staining or
immaturity. Danny said the birds were several hundred
yards from him, and he wasn't able to see any bands or
markings on them due to the distance. Follow-up
attempts at finding the birds have been unsuccessful,
and he reported that less than 30 birds remained as of
this afternoon.

I can vouch for Danny's skills as an observer. He has
been a very good friend of mine for nearly 20 years,
and we have spent many hours together in the outdoors
while sharing a bass boat in pursuit of Dale Hollow's
Smallmouth Bass, or sitting hidden with binoculars at
one of his duck ponds in the Cumberland River bottoms
for fabulous close-up views of waterfowl. His
profession allows him to be outdoors on Dale Hollow
everyday, and I think it's reasonably safe to say that
he has probably seen more migrant Sandhill Cranes than
anyone reading this post.

It's very exciting to me knowing that we could be
seeing these birds in Kentucky now, so keep your eyes
open and remember, we could get Common Cranes too.

Dave
