The transient lakes near Woodburn in Warren County
continue to attract a growing number of waterbirds.
Jackie Elmore and I checked McElroy Lake on Friday the
28th, and 400-500 Sandhill Cranes were still present
as in the previous week. Waterfowl numbers had
increased, with 14 species present including
approximately 30 Greater White-fronted Geese.
The major flight of cranes on Saturday reported by
Steve Stedman brought many to Kentucky as well. I
received several reports of large flocks Saturday in
Warren and Edmonson Counties, as well as observing a
flock of about 125 in the air along I-65 north of
Bowling Green myself. A check of McElroy at
mid-morning today revealed at least 1300 cranes, with
an estimated 800-900 on the ground. Several departing
flocks could be seen in the air, some already at great
distances from the lake and thermalling high in the
clear blue sky, and all drifting toward the
north-northwest as they continued their journey.
Waterfowl species in the area numbered 18 today, with
a pair of Snow Geese and a single Ross's Goose at
Walton's Pond on hwy 240.
Other birds of interest included 40+ Pectoral
Sandpipers and a Dunlin at McElroy, along with many
pipits, larks, and longspurs.
A dark-morph Harlan's Red-tailed Hawk was seen along
hwy 68-80 near Rockfield.
