If the weather in TN was anything like it was in KY on Saturday, I doubt
that there was actually "migration" taking place. It seems that many of the
region's birds have actually been sitting in place for a week or more, but
they often travel from roosting to feeding areas, or when they get
frightened from one place, they may make local movements, perhaps mostly
northerly given the time of year???
Now TODAY is likely another story, if the feeding areas are not to their
liking, I don't doubt that we will lose many of our birds to migratory
movements northward with clear skies finally moving in.

Subject: [birdky] crane flight 1 mar 03
March 2, 2003: Quite a number of posts to TN-Bird and BirdKy concerned the
crane flight yesterday. I can add a few additional notes to what you have
probably already surmised, i.e., that yester-
day was indeed a peak day in the migration of Sandhills through the Upper
Cumberland. Danny Stone is a waterfowl hunter who lives in Celina, Clay Co.,
TN. Yesterday he counted about 3000 Sandhill Cranes near Celina, all flying
north. About 1300 CST he checked a field that lies right on the boundardy
between Clay Co., TN, and Monroe Co., KY, and found a large number of
Sandhills on the ground. Among these birds were two large white cranes,
which he took to be two Whooping Cranes.
Thanks to Terry Campbell for passing the word of Danny's sighting and for
making an effort to find these cranes with me and Winston Walden this
morning(no luck).
