Matt Stickel alerted me to the presence of more than one scoter on the Ohio
River at Louisville today and I visited the area along with several other
birders this afternoon. There were about as many mid-winter ducks as we've had
on the river at Louisville in many years. Late in the afternoon, I met Ben &
Mary Yandell out on Chamberlain Lane near the Mint Spring Stables and saw a
very nice flock of 200+ Lapland Longspurs.
On the river from the Falls to Six-Mile Island were the following:
Mute Swan 1 ad
Am Black Duck 4
Mallard 50
Gadwall 20
Ring-necked Duck 3
Redhead 30
Canvasback 85+
Lesser Scaup 35-40+
Greater Scaup 8-10+
Bufflehead 10-12+
Common Goldeneye 20+
Hooded Merganser 6
Ring-billed Gull 50-75 (finally some at the Falls)
Herring Gull 10-12+
