There has been a Merlin hanging out on the Dayton, KY riverfront since
yesterday. It perches high in the cottonwood trees in between the Lazy Gecko
Restaurant at the River City Marina (formerly O'Fallon's Landing) and Queen
City
Riverboats. I was able to get some very nice long, close scope views of the
falcon this morning. It is a fairly dark individual, similar to the adult
female Taiga Merlin shown on page 138 of Wheeler and Clark's photographic
guide to
North American Raptors. I did get a good look at the legs and feet and there
is no sign of a band.
To see the Merlin take KY 8 east through Bellevue and turn left on
O'Fallon Ave, turn right where O'Fallon dead ends and go east on the road
along
the river. The parking lot for the Lazy Gecko is on the left just a short
distance ahead.
