Four folks showed up today to take a wonderful hike down in the Laurel Gorge in
Elliott County. The water fall and cliffline were frozen, with long icicles
cascading from the top to meet icicles coming up from the ground, like
stalagmites in a cave. The snow and ice combination made the hike spectacular.
We saw the regulars you would expect this time of year. We had both downy
and hairy woodpecker on the same tree, which made ID really easy. The
woodpeckers were active and the sounds were incredible. Each species having
its own distinctive sound echoing in the gorge. There are no pine siskins at
the Welcome Center feeders this year, last year they were numerous. There was
lots of activity around the feeders, juncos, goldfinches, sparrow, towhee, and
the other feeder birds.
A short stop at Grayson Lake Dam to look at the only small opening of
unfrozen water proved to only have few Canada Geese, and some very tame
mallards. All in all, it was a wonderful day!
Next month, March 10 we will be going to the wetland in Lewis County...join
us.
