Levee near Lake #9
Over the weekend a rogue group (7 eagles were seen one time) of eagles
attacked the nesting pair that have been there for years. These attacks were
witnessed on Fri. Sat and Sun. This pair had been sitting on the nest for at
least a week. The Eagles were not seen sitting on the eggs Sat. or Sun. They
were not seen on the nest for long periods of time both Sat. and Sunday so the
eggs probably are not viable if they were not destroyed. One Eagle was seen
actually in the nest ripping out nesting material from inside of the nest and
jumping up and down in the nest. At least one incident of fighting in the nest
was witnessed. Sunday evening I was there and one Eagle flew in and was
observed eating for a while and then flew off. Later two Eagles came in and sat
in the nest, presumed to be the nesting pair. Turned out the male was not the
mate and after I left, her mate came in and attacked the intruder. I missed
it!!! There is some documentation of the confrontations on Sat. and Sunday.
One of my guests has a short video of one incident. The pair was observed by
the nest on Tues. and I was there yesterday afternoon and they were there.
Hopefully they will start another brood.
There is another pair of Eagles that have built a nest on the levee 1.7 miles
North of this nest. Could there be a conflict of territories?? This pair
has fledged many young over the years, could there be a conflict from the
eagles hatched from that nest?? There are immatures seen hanging out around
the nest every year and speculation is that these birds don't want to
leave.....it was reported last year that the male had to run off an immature
several times.....or was it a Northern interloper intruding trying to woe the
Southern Belle to go North with him??
nature is amazing and so mysterious.....so many questions left unanswered .....
