I had an hour or so to look thru the gulls at Kentucky and Barkley Dams
again yesterday morning before a meeting. The swirl of gulls below KY
dam in the morning sun was truly spectacular ... my guess is that there
were at least 5,000 and perhaps in excess of 10,000 birds at one point.
The second-year Great Black-backed was easily found again, as were two
adult or near-adult (3rd yr?) Lesser Black-backs; I think there was also
a full adult, but didn't see them all at one time. The only thing new I
found was a nice adult Thayer's Gull perched on one of the new highway
pilings with Herrings. I was sort of surprised not to see a Glaucous in
the mix, but could have easily missed one.
Over at Barkley Dam, there is also a nice concentration, but there were
many fewer Herring Gulls in the mix and mostly just adult Ring-billeds.
